News Flash: Newman Knowlton is still alive even though he hasn't blogged in over a month!!!

I know that everyone gets "wrapped" up in the hustle and bustle of the holidays, but I thought that I would get a break from the rat race during January. Unfortunately, M&D are as busy as ever and that prevents me from blogging because I absolutely refuse to publish a post without at least one of my editors proofing. For Dog's sake, I do have a reputation to uphold.

I am happy to report that our fundraising effort to raise money for the American Cancer Society and the Morris Animal Canine Cancer Campaign by selling calendars was a smashing success!!! Just tonight Mom wrote out checks to both charities for $250. Thank you all for your support!

This year's campaign was especially heartfelt because, unfortunately, cancer has been a big part of our lives. In September, my Pappy John was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. I am very happy say that he looked the beast in the eye, vowed to beat it and said, "Bring it on!" Actually, he didn't say that, but he is attacking it with that attitude which has served him well.

In October, Mom lost a treasured co-worker from Penn State Law from a courageous battle with esophageal cancer. In December, I lost my Great Aunt Mary Kennedy to bone cancer. I could go on listing people we lost or have been afflicted with cancer, but that's a bummer.

My two-legged cousin and aspiring young gymnast, Ally Richwine, who is cute as a bug in a rug, recently joined me in the War Against Cancer in the hopes that we will find a cure. She just recently participated in "Cartwheels for Cancer" and completed 287 cartwheels in 10 minutes and raised nearly $150. Certainly nothing to snub your nose at. Being a snub-nosed beast, I would know.

Although slightly disappointed — and very light headed — that she didn't reach the 300 mark, she certainly has nothing to be ashamed of. Don't worry kiddo, next year you'll reach your goal. I'm very proud that you have chosen to follow in my paw-steps raising funds for important charities. You rock!

With M&D being such big fans of the TV show Seinfeld — evidenced in part by my namesake — it only seems fitting that we share the story of Festivus with you.

Festivus is a secular holiday celebrated on December 23 as a way to celebrate the holiday season without participating in its pressures, religious aspects and commercialism. It was created by writer Dan O'Keefe and introduced into popular culture by his son Daniel, a screenwriter for Seinfeld, as part of a comical storyline on the show. The holiday's celebration, as shown on Seinfeld, includes an unadorned aluminum "Festivus pole," practices such as the "Airing of Grievances" and "Feats of Strength," and the labeling of easily explainable events as "Festivus miracles." Celebrants of the holiday sometimes refer to it as "a Festivus for the rest of us," a saying taken from the O'Keefe family traditions and popularized in the Seinfeld episode to describe Festivus' non-commercial aspect.

Oh my how the time doth fly when you're having fun, and we have been having fun. The Triple Threat has been so busy as of late that once again it has taken away from my blogging duties. I know, I know. Everyone is busy during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

So much for a white Christmas!

Speaking of the holiday season, Dog Scout Troop 161 once again participated in bell ringing for the Salvation Army at our the local Wal-mart in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. I must admit that we "rocked the Red Kettle" and brought in lots of Fi-dough.

Even though we contribute money to various causes throughout the year, bell ringing definitely tops our list for activities that we love doing the most. After all, we get to have fun and raise money for those less fortunate than our elf selves.

The sky is not the limit

Many of you have asked if there will be a 2012 Katandy's Triple Threat calendar. Well, the news just surfaced and we are please to tell you that this year's calendar promises to be "out of this world!" After all, how could we possibly stop a tradition that began with my boxer predecessor Beulah Ruth?

October 2012 -- Happy Hula-Ween

Like last year, the wall calendars will be printed on premium glossy 8.5x11 paper and saddle-stitched. Cost will be $15 per calendar ($17 if being shipped to you via USPS). Any proceeds made above cost will be donated to the Morris Animal Foundation Canine Cancer Campaign and the American Cancer Society, in hopes of finding a cure for a terrible disease that has unfortunately has impacted our lives so much over the past year.

The calendars make wonderful presents for dog lovers who have everything and people who find it amusing to see pets dressed in silly costumes, so make sure to order enough for friends and family.

If you would like to order a calendar(s), please e-mail Mom at newmanontheblock@gmail.com no later than November 28 so that we can get them to you in time for Christmas and provide the following information:

Here’s a little known fact from yet another famous postal worker, Cliff, from the 80’s sitcom Cheers. Often incorrectly cited as the motto of the U.S. Postal Service, this quote actually is an inscription on the James Farley Post Office in New York City, derived from a quote from The Histories of Herodotus, referring to the courier service of the ancient Persian Empire. So there you have it. Right from a U.S. mail carrier’s mouth.

While we’re on the subject of the U.S. Postal Service, Mom and Pappy John stopped at the smallest working Post Office in the United States during their EcoTour while in Fort Myers, Florida. It was closed because it was a Presidents Day, but their tour guide assured them that a U.S. Postal employee reports to duty there every day. Unless they can freely lift their leg on some vegetation like Saw Palm, I don’t know where they relieve themselves. But that’s their problem.

The Triple Threat takes a break from the trail

Thelma, Roger and I took advantage of the nice weather this past weekend and hit the trails at Kings Gap State Park and Environmental Education Center. As good Dog Scouts, we carried the requisite items in our backpacks to be prepared for the unexpected.

For those inexperienced hikers who want to know what we carry in our First Aid Kit, I will enlighten you. Unlike Calgon, it’s not an Ancient Chinese secret. While I do have an uncle who is American-Chinese, he’s pretty boring and doesn’t really have any secrets to divulge.

First Aid medications to keep handy while hiking, traveling, and every day use*:

Benadryl (for bee stings and other allergic bites)
PeptoBismal (upset stomach)
Immodium AD (diarrhea)
Melatonin (anxiety)
Aspirin (mild pain relief)

Never give Tylenol or any product containing acetaminophen which is toxic to dogs.

Dog nab it! Last week was National Dog Week, and I missed blogging about it. What kind of Dog Scout am I? I just recently received a notice from Dog Scouts of America saying that I needed to pay my annual dues (which I had already done) and now this! I thought sure that it was this week – the last week in September. I made certain that I didn’t miss Grandparents Day or the 10th Anniversary of 9-11, but then this happens. As it turns out, it’s the last full week in September which has been duly noted for next year. I guess it’s like those other crazy holidays like Election Day which falls on the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November.

In any event for those of you who don't know, National Dog Week was founded to encourage responsible pet ownership and promote good relations between people and their dogs – something that we, as Dog Scouts, promote every day of the year.

We have just been so busy with other stuff that blogging has been placed on the back burner. Thanks to Google Analytics, I know that the traffic to my site has been way up since our recent trip to the OBX. I apologize to you newcomers who visit day after day looking for new material only to find none. After all, my name is Newman, meaning “Man of all things New!” Actually, I don’t know if that’s what it means, but it sounds good.

While we’re on the subject of new, Roger finally got to go to a Dog Scout event with Mom. Quite frankly, I got sick and tired of hearing him moan about how he was the black sheep in the family, so I told Mom to take him with her just to get him to shut up his yapper. Seriously, on a cold, rainy day like last Saturday, I had no desire to spend it at Bark in the Park. I was all too happy to spend it with Dad and Thelma Lou on the couch.

Being the little charismatic Frenchman, Rog made the best of situation and managed to land a job at Metro Bank’s mascot. No stripes off my brindle back. Even Thelma Lou was “ok” with it so long as he keeps his endorsements with Metro Bank and don't infringe upon her duties as Buckley Beaver at ACNB Bank.

IMPROV Sport Exposed

As many of you know, Mom and I made our debut in the first sanctioned IMPROV trial hosted by Dog Scout Troop 161 last month at Dandy Dog Training, during which time I qualified for the first leg of my IMPROV Novice Title (so in your face, Dad!).

I am pleased to let you know that Dog Scout Troop 161 will be hosting another IMPROV trial on Saturday, October 22 at Fieldwood Dog Training Center beginning at 5 p.m. Entries will be $25 per run. Dogs must have DSA Competition Registration Numbers (CRNs) prior to event registration. Closing date for entries is October 15, 2011. Facility is indoors. For additional information, see the IMPROV Trial Premium or contact Troop 161 Scoutmaster Ann Withun.

If you're wondering what the sport of IMPROV is, see my post of July 24 — DSA Sanctioned IMPROV Trial in which I try to layout the basics. I must admit that IMPROV really is hard to explain to anyone who has not witnessed the sport. While I do not have as vast a vocabulary as some, the adjectives that first come to mind to describe IMPROV are: fun, hilarious, fun, entertaining, fun, challenging, fun, exhausting, but most importantly FUN! Did I mention that it was a ton of fun?

You know the old saying, a picture is worth a thousand words. Well in the case of something as different as IMPROV, a video has to be worth a gazillion words — which is what it would take me to explain the two-day event. Seeing how my editor only gives me about 1,000 words to get my story across to my fans, I thought that video was definitely the way to go.

During this first video, the dogs demonstrate their knowledge of the commands touch and send.

In this video, Kozi demonstrates her ability to sniff out human remains, a task that she has been called upon to carry out for law enforcement officers in Michigan.

The Toy Story

What is a vacation without a new toy or two to enjoy? The Pooch Ball that Roger is playing with lasted almost two weeks before I breached the integrity of the rubber casing. After the security breach, Mom retired it from our toy system so that we don't swallow any of the pieces which could cause gastrointestinal upset or worse -- intestinal blockage. Been there. Done that. No fun for me or for M&D worrying whether or not I was going to have to have emergency surgery.

Some dogs, like Roger and I, are natural born killers and destroy toys at an amazing rate. It is important for owners to supervise playtime with toys, especially those that can be torn to bits in no time, and to remove them as soon as they show any wear or tear. If your dog is a heavy chewer, you should restrict the toys that you provide for her to play with. Kong makes an excellent range of tough toys for heavy chewers. We also enjoy playing with durable plush toys made by Tuffy. Our favorite toy from the Tuffy line was Tuffzilla. We're on week two of our vacation in the Outer Banks and the weather just keeps getting better. Yesterday, the sea was no longer angry and the red flags were taken down. It was the first day that we saw dolphins and we were allowed to swim -- that is those of us who know how to swim. Roger and I are definitely not in that category.

While not everyone is a dog person, the beaches of Corolla are very dog-friendly. Many people have told us how much they enjoy watching us romp on the beach, including Alex Moir of A.M. Bespoke Travel, who very kindly shared some action photos that he took of us this past week.

Happy Grandparents Day!

In light of the 10th Anniversary of 9-11, I decided to hold off on posting this message until a little later in the day. While not an official Penn State holiday for Mom, today is Grandparents Day! I just thought that I should alert my followers who may not have known about this ever-so-important holiday.

And here's a little bit of history for you. The impetus for National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife in Fayette County, West Virginia. Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes, something that The Triple Threat does with great pleasure on a regular basis. Ms. McQuade also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap into the wisdom and heritage that their grandparents could provide. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day.

Love your neighbor as yourself

The Triple Threat really does not have a particular photo that portrays how much we love our grandparents. However, having just received an e-mail message from a friend quoting Perry Smith's poem "To a Keeper" we thought that a modified version was particularly appropriate to post considering that the 10th Anniversary of 9-11 and Grandparents Day fell on the same day.

One day a woman's husband died, and on that clear, cold morning, in the warmth of their bedroom, the wife was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't anymore.

No more hugs, no more special moments to celebrate together, no more phone calls just to chat, no more just one minute.

Sometimes, what we care about the most gets all used up and goes away, never to return before we can say "good-bye" or "I love you."

So while we have it, it's best we love it, care for it, fix it when it's broken and heal it when it's sick. This is true for marriage, problematic children, dogs with bad hips, and aging parents and grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it!

Life is important. People who are special to us, we keep close!

Many people get caught up in the trivial aspects of who is right or wrong. Dogs don't. We love our parents, grandparents, and friends unconditionally and let them know every day how much we love them with butt wags and slobbery kisses,

Katandy's Triple Threat "remembers" 9-11

Although none of us were yet to be born when the tragic attack on our country occurred on September 11, 2001, M & D have told us stories about how horrible it was. Ironically, they happened to be vacationing in the Outer Barks like we are today with our late sister Beulah and remember the day vividly.

Daddy Dog says this of that horrendous day, "What I remember most, besides the actual attacks, was how beautiful the weather was. There wasn't a cloud in the sky and although not in the mood to go to the beach, I gave in to Beulah's plea to go for a walk and get away from the dreadful scenes on the TV.

"What we encountered was not a single soul sitting on the beach relaxing. It wasn't a day for relaxing. It was a day of sadness and mourning. A day that will never be forgotten."

Please join us in remembering all the lives lost on this tragic day ten years ago.

Today four years ago Katandy's Calypso Moon Newman was born. After spending a relaxing day on the beach, we partied pretty hard around the pool eating bone-shaped pumpkin cake. Yummy!!! With the monsoon-like weather back home in Pennsyltucky, I am sure that many of you are wondering how the weather is here in the OBX. I am happy to report that the weather here has been absolutely perfect. Last Friday night when we went to bed, we said, "Good night Irene, and Hello Newman!"

Irene did, however, leave some remnants behind that made for some lovely photo ops. Dad was drooling at the chops of possibly bringing home some of the incredible driftwood that was brought up on shore. And then his dream was crushed by a big piece of machinery that came in and scooped up the large debris to remove it. Oh well.

We have had the pleasure of running into some friends who we met last year. Ironically, they have a Frenchie granddaughter named Tooty. Grandma Julie explained that Tooty has a wry jaw which just makes her extra special. M&D immediately thought that they might have found a female prospect for Roger who would be willing to look past some of his quirky behaviors. We had the pleasure of meeting and romping with Tooty yesterday afternoon. At half the size and weight of Roger with the same size bat ears, she is as cute as a button. I think that maybe when it comes to the ears on Frenchies, it's a one-size fits all deal.

DSA Sanctioned IMPROV Trial

Looking to try something new with your K-9 companion? Join us on August 13-14 for the first ever Dog Scouts of America sanctioned IMPROV trial at Dandy Dog Training in Newville, PA, sponsored by my Troop 161. You do not have to be a Dog Scout to compete. However,all dogs must have DSA Competition Registration Numbers (CRNs) prior to event registration. Registration deadline has been extended to Saturday, July 30 (see details below).

Created in the 1970s by Lonnie Olson, IMPROV stands for Impromptu Multifarious Performance Requiring Obedience and Versatility. In short, it is a different kind of obedience competition, which puts the emphasis on a dog's ability to perform cues as asked.

IMPROV tests how ready dogs are to be useful in real life. There is no standard course or judging format. However, it does have standard categories of exercises like retrieving and touching strange objects that would be found lying around your house. Each time you go into a ring, you are required to do a different set of exercises. This is what makes IMPROV more fun and challenging than standard obedience, because you never know what you will be asked to do. For more detailed information on the rules, download a copy of the IMPROV rule book from the Dogs Scouts website.

Mom has registered me in the novice category and I hope not to embarrass us too much. Really, the whole point is to have fun and for Mom to use her brain to get me to complete new tasks by using skills that I already know. So, basically she needs to “think outside the Milk-bone box!”

Even if you don't plan to enter, come show your support for this relatively new sport and learn what it's all about. It's entertaining for participants and spectators alike. Plus, we are going to have some really nice raffle baskets that you can enter to win. Believe me, I know. Mom is the Volunteer Coordinator and has been busy collecting all kinds of cool K-9 commodities, including interactive games, tasty treats, as well as grooming and first-aid supplies.

Although having been reared as huge Philadelphia Flyers hockey fans, the Backyard Brushtown Bullies are in no way affiliated with the legendary Broad Street Bullies, who in 1972-73 shed the mediocre expansion team label and became known as the intimidating Broad Street Bullies. The nickname was coined by Jack Chevalier and Pete Cafone of the Philadelphia Bulletin on January 3, 1973 after a 3 to 1 brawling victory over the Atlanta Flames.

"The image of the fightin' Flyers spread gradually around the NHL, and people are dreaming up wild nicknames. They're the Mean Machine, the Bullies of Broad Street and Freddy's Philistines," wrote Chevalier in his reporting of the game. Cafone wrote the accompanying headline, "Broad Street Bullies Muscle Atlanta."

For some dogs Fourth of July fireworks are a major source of anxiety and fear. To help keep your furry, four-legged friends safe, I've put together a list of tips that I picked up from various sources along the way.

Do not take your pet to fireworks displays.
Do not leave your pet in the car. With only hot air to breathe inside a car, your pet can suffer serious health effects—even death—in a few short minutes. Partially opened windows do not provide sufficient air.
Keep your pets indoors at home in a sheltered, quiet area. Some animals can become destructive when frightened, so be sure that you've removed any items that your pet could destroy or that would be harmful to your pet if chewed. Leave a television or radio playing at normal volume to keep him company.
If you know that your pet is seriously distressed by loud noises like thunder, consult with your veterinarian before July 4th for ways to help alleviate the fear and anxiety he or she will experience during fireworks displays.
Never leave pets outside unattended, even in a fenced yard or on a tether. In their fear, pets who normally wouldn't leave the yard may escape and become lost, or become entangled in their chain, risking injury or death.
Make sure your pets are wearing identification tags so that if they do become lost, they can be returned promptly. Animals found running at-large should be taken to the local animal shelter, where they will have the best chance of being reunited with their owners.

Ajax visits Penn State Law

After seeing her big-headed cousin, Ajax, cruising around in his Mini Cooper, Thelma Lou decided that she needed a convertible coupe of her very own. Being a world-renowned fashionista, Thelma Lou spends her allowance on expanding her wardrobe, so she doesn't have the funds to spend on sports cars.

Furthermore, unlike Ajax I don't think that her feet would reach the pedals. So what's a poor girl to do? Fashion a pretend one out of a lawn chair and its cushion.

Thelma Lou was such a little water bug that she clearly misses that activity. After coming off the beach on the last day and having a bevy of young studs ask if they could have their picture taken with her, a little bit of stardom has gone to her head, too.

I told both of them to "Lighten up, Francis. We're going back at the end of the summer for two weeks! This was just a teaser week to kick off summer — even though we really do know it's still spring.

So what does Thelma Lou do to relieve her post-beachtum depression? Like a lot of woman, she shops, of course. She said, "If we are really going back to the OBX in September, then I cannot be seen in the same bathing suits that I wore in May! I must get a special one to wear on 9-11!" Like anydog really cares. Although I am her brother, I can confidently say that the onlookers are admiring her figure and not the suit! BOL! (Bark Out Loud!)

Being a connoisseur of fine art that I am, I decided to peruse a few art galleries while vacationing in the Outer Banks. I was immediately drawn to a breathtaking piece portraying Sandro Botticelli's painting The Birth of Venus, depicting the goddess Venus emerging from the sea as a full grown woman.

Knowing that the original painting is held in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, I discerned that this portrait had to be a reproduction of the famed Italian's masterpiece. However, overcome by its astounding beauty, I couldn't shake the desire to have the piece for my own collection. Not wanting to have the "wool pulled over my eyes," I called a reliable art authenticator in the area who confirmed that the painting was an original and well worth the price tag that was being asked. So without batting another Boxer eye, I put a call into my broker who transferred the money to Seaside Art Gallery and I am now the proud owner of The Birth of a Beach Bully.

Still having a wonderful time in the Outer Banks. The weather has been perfect and the water has warmed up considerably making swimming a lot of fun. Thelma Lou is a little water bug. We are having a wonderful time in the Outer Banks with friends and family. The weather has been great. The water is freezing, but it's still fun to romp in the surf. If I still had my family jewels, they'd be as shriveled as prunes. Poor Thelma Lou was shivering like a dog shitting razor blades after an extended romp retrieving the infamous Tuff Coat II glove stuffed with a tennis ball -- by far the most favorite toy on the beach. We're thinking about patenting it.

It's cool having both Dad and Uncle Mike in the pack.When visiting Grammy Lee, Mom has mistaken other brindle boxers for me. This week she's having trouble telling the difference between Dad and Uncle Mike.

This week is "Dog Bite Prevention Week"

In case you are not aware, May 15-21, 2011 is designated as Dog Bite Prevention Week. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, 4.7 million people are bitten by dogs each year in the United States, with 800,000 of them requiring medical attention. As a Dog Scout, I constantly promote the proper greeting of myself to my human counterparts, especially children.

Children are most at risk because they often approach dogs without hesitation or engage in rough play or fur-grabbing, resulting in injury. Thelma Lou, who wouldn't bite a flea (and better not have any on her dog because we use Advantix II), has been Troop 161's poster pup for several children's events — demonstrating to children how to properly approach a dog.

Neighborhood watchdog prepared to take a bite out of crime

Actually, it is important to recognize that any dog can bite — even Thelma Lou with her pronounced under bite can still take a bite out of crime or anyone else for that matter, especially if she is injured or feels threatened.

According to veterinary behaviorist Dr. Sophia Yin, DVM, MS, "The truth is that the majority of bites are actually due to fear, and they occur because humans fail to recognize the signs of fear in dogs." Proper training and socialization of dogs as well as training humans how to recognize dog body language and approach dogs in a non-threatening manner is crucial to avoid dog bites.

Dr. Yin has compiled the following public service announcement video on "Recognizing Fearful Behavior in Dogs." We give the video "four paws up!" or "twelve paws up" collectively.

After having attended the Royal Wedding last month as a guest of the Queen, one would think that I would have had enough pomp and circumstance in my life for quite some time. Au contraire. I jumped right back in the saddle and headed to Kentucky — not for the Derby but for the 2011 American Boxer Club National Specialty Show — commonly referred to as ABC where all the elite boxers compete, including Katandy's Fast Forward "Frankie," who took Best of Opposite Sex handled by Dan Buchwald.

There's no requirement that you have to be a Boxer to attend the National ABC show, but Roger and Thelma Lou stayed at home to keep Dad in line. You know the old saying, "When the cat's away, the mice will play." Honestly, I had my doubts about Roger keeping anyone, including himself, in line. Obviously, as the only female in the house Thelma Lou called all the shots because Dad pressure washed and stained the entire deck, hand scrubbed and waxed the floors, and planted all of Mom's favorite flowers while we were gone. He certainly was one busy little beaver, and we all benefit from the fruits of his labor.

Although I missed playing with Roger and Thelma Lou, I must admit that it was really cool to have Mom all to myself on Mother's Day. First, I surprised her with breakfast in bed — a bowl of Kellogg's Cinnamon Pecan Special K. What do you expect? We're shacked up in a hotel room and I had to work with what I had. Then I presented her with a beautiful bouquet of red roses.

We topped off the day with a rigorous 3-mile hike in the beautiful Eden Park of Cincinnati, which overlooks the Ohio River, bringing my current total to 7.5 miles of the 12 miles that I committed to hike for our Hike-a-Thon to raise money for Dog Scouts of America while promoting responsible dog ownership.

Our community hike took place last Saturday, May 14 at Fieldwood Dog Training Center in Carlisle. With the exception of a few pit stops, Roger led the pack for almost the entire 3-mile course. K-9s Dressed to the Nines to attend Royal Wedding

It's old news that the names of U.S. President Barack Obama and French President Nicolas Sarkozy did not find a place in the official guest list of nearly 1,900 for the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. The reason given by a spokesdog for the British Royal Family is that only the crowned heads of state are invited.

Among the invites are soccer star David Beckham and wife Victoria, musician Sir Elton John, and director Guy Ritchie. The screen stars on the coveted invitation list include soul singer Joss Stone and Rowan Atkinson, the man who portrays Mr. Bean. While the inclusion of these invitees may have surprised some, a bigger surprise yet was the exclusion of Katandy's Triple Threat!

Although not on the official list released to the media, Katandy's Triple Threat will indeed be in attendance as guests of Queen Elizabeth herself. Until now, the announcement of the Triple Threat's appearance at Barkingham Palace has been kept under wraps because of the astronomical crowd that the trio will undoubtedly draw.

"We really wanted to keep the appearance of the Triple Threat a secret until the actual day of the event for fear that the Royal Military might not be able to safely guard the palace," said the Queen. "However, a leak to the Puparazzi resulted in a photo of the Triple Threat on the front lawn of the Palace ending up on the front page of The Times."

Green Dewclaw Advice Sought

With my upcoming trip to the American Boxer Club National Specialty in Kentucky, I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to squeeze in the trip abroad to attend the wedding. However, as word of the luscious gardens that I maintain at the Brushtown Aboretum has spread across the Atlantic, Mark Lane, Gardens Manager at Barkingham, personally requested my presence to insure that the condition of the gardens are fit for a future king.

"I am extremely grateful that Newman has agreed to arrive at the Palace a few days early to make sure that the gardens are set for the wedding," said Lane. "It really helps ease my mind. Having Newman here to consult with is like having the weight of the world lifted from my shoulders!"

While only a few lucky ones will get a ringside view of the wedding, I am delighted that Monsieur Roger, Lady Thelma Lou, and I will be among them. Although I must admit, I am more excited about attending my first ever ABC National Show the following week.

"Although the media has speculated on the style and designer of Kate's gown, thankfully that information has not been divulged because it symbolizes her personality, her style, and the kind of queen she may one day become," the Queen said.

For Kate's sake, I hope that information can continue to be kept a secret until the big day. However, Lady Lou did receive a phone call last evening from E! requesting an interview about her take on the subject. Could the designer of Thelma Lou's black velvet dress be one and the same? Time will tell when that information is unveiled.

Along with fellow members of Dog Scout Troop 161, Roger, Thelma Lou, Mom and I are hiking to raise money for Dog Scouts of America (DSA) in the first annual Hike-a-Thon.

A group hike by our troop is scheduled for May 14th at Fieldwood Dog Training Center in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. While we hope to participate this hike, it may not be possible since we will just be returning from the American Boxer Club national show in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky.

Our overall goal for the Hike-a-Thon will be to hike a total of 10 miles during the month of May. Since Roger and Thelma have such short legs, I feel it's only fair to divide the miles up between us. Roger and Thelma have committed to do 2 miles each with Mom, and I plan to hike the entire 10.

Our goal is to raise $200 as a group. For every $50 we raise over our goal, Mom and I will commit to walking an additional mile. While hiking 10 miles during an entire month may not seem like that great of a commitment, keep in mind that Mom does have a full-time job and hasn't exercised in months -- so this is my way of getting her to get her butt in gear. We are planning to start conditioning tomorrow. You can view our progress by visiting my fundraising page, and while you're there, you might even consider contributing a few bucks to a good cause.

If we reach our goal, which I am confident that we will, we'll each be entitled to a DSA Hike-a-Thon patch.

DSA programs promote responsible dog ownership that include programs to help dog owners enjoy a great relationship with a well-mannered dog while benefiting from each other's company. DSA members strive to solve any problems that come their way with positive and effective training, thus helping to reduce the number of unwanted dogs in shelters by keeping them in happy, lifelong homes.

Since 2007, Troop 161 has raised over $10,000 for charities that help people and dogs, including the Salvation Army, local police K9s, and service dogs. Our troop members actively participate in educational and therapy programs for kids and adults.

I just want to say thank you to everyone who generously donated to Mom's "cause" for her birthday.

Not that I am one to toot my own horn, but I feel it's my duty as a young aspiring philanthropist to let everyone know how easy it is to solicit and receive funds for your very own cause. While Mom was busy tailoring my sports coat for my upcoming appearance at the American Boxer Club National Show in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, I highjacked her Facebook account and set up a Birthday Wish through Causes to raise funds for a charity new and dear to our heart, Adopt A Boxer Rescue.

Causes is the world’s largest platform for activism and philanthropy which empowers individuals to create grassroots communities called “causes” that take action on behalf of a specific issue or nonprofit organization.

Singing in the rain -- NOT!

Tomorrow is April 1st and we are not liking the joke that Old Man Winter is playing on us with this cold and nasty weather. "Singing in the Frozen Precipitation" just doesn't have the same ring!

One thing is for sure, we are ready for Spring to spring into action. Although it officially began on March 21, the temperatures certainly haven't been spring-like in our neck of the woods. Besides a few daffodils poking their heads through the soil and Robins fluttering about, we haven't seen any indication of the end to winter.

Pissed off at Punxsutawney Phil, Mom has been on vigilant alert for groundhogs raring their ugly heads at the edge of our property. Thankfully for them she hasn't spotted any of the rascally rodents, because I fear that her gun-slinging Annie Oakely side might come out of hibernation should she see one.

The Good Sami - And I'm not talking sandwich

You may remember my Boxer friend Sassy Mae, who was severely injured in 2009 and needed extensive veterinary care. So, Roger and I pulled our resources together and held a gourmet biscuit fund drive to help curtail the costs of her vast vet bills. Of course, I was the brains behind the operation while Roger used his dog-given French culinary skills to perfect the recipes.

Unfortunately, we are once again faced with a similar situation. Sami, named for the Good Samaritan who brought her into an ER clinic, is also in need of our help. She was found alongside the road on a very cold and snowy night, suffering from serious injuries after being hit by a car. Attempts to locate her owner have proven futile, so she was turned over to Adopt A Boxer Rescue (AABR) and surgery to correct the break was performed on February 25. You can read her full story on AABR's website.

Aunt Beth Downey, who is fostering Sami until she is fully recovered and available for adoption, reports that she is a very sweet, friendly Boxer girl despite the pain she has endured. Mom and I were fortunate enough to meet Sami when we recently attended the Celtic Classic Dog show in York, PA, and we agree that she is a cutie!

Well, we pawsatively had a great time at Pawsabilities 2011 last weekend! New this year, our Dog Scout Troop 161 ran the Gambler's Choice Obstacle Course which helped raise money for the Susquehanna Service Dogs (SSD). Mom and Thelma Lou "manned" our troop's booth while Roger dressed as a card shark to help draw in participants.

In addition to raising money for the SSD, Dog Scout Troop 161 helped raise awareness of responsible pet ownership, which includes cleaning up after your pets. I say, duh! But you would be surprised at how many owners don't see the need.

Paws up for my fellow Troop Member Marguerite who very politely informed an irresponsible pet owner, who clearly saw her dog urinate on the floor and planned to walk away, that she was responsible for cleaning up after him. Sure, we all get overly excited at times which sometimes includes not being able to control our bodily functions, but that's what our owners are for, right? Heck, Mom and I are well on our way to earning my Clean Up America II Scout badge for picking up after irresponsible owners. I currently have 25 documented piles to date to prove it.

Oh yeah, and Thelma Lou participated in doggy dance freestyle with Fieldwood Instructor Ms. Mary Kutulakis, founder and long-time member of Steppin' Woofs.

Last but certainly not least, we kicked dog butt in the costume contest on Saturday and brought home a big blue ribbon -- something I was never able to do in the conformation ring. Rumor has it that the Triple Threat might even become the official spokesdogs for Pawsabilities 2012. Only time will tell.

I don't want you to think that I've abandoned my fans. It's just that Mom was in Florida for 10 days, so I was without an editor to review my ramblings before posting for the entire world to criticize. Additionally, we have been busy getting ready for the 15th Annual Pawsabilities to be held this Saturday and Sunday, March 12-13 at the Farm Show Expo Center in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

The the two-day fundraising event, which benefits Susquehanna Service Dogs, will feature numerous Olympic games, the Great Biscuit Bite-Off, where SSD dogs will judge homemade treats, costume contests (ahem!), and a host of other events and activities. Like last year, the event will include performances by the Ultimate Air Dogs, one of the premier dock jumping organizations in the country. If you've never seen a dock diving competition, it's well worth your time. With their short, little legs, I don't think that Roger and Thelma would be contenders in the diving competition and will stick to entering the costume contest.

New for PawsAbilities 2011 is the Gambler's Choice Obstacle Course which will be run by none other than my very own Dog Scout Troop 161. The course contains obstacles that range from easy to difficult, such as going through a tunnel or jumping over a hay bale to retrieving a rubber ducky and scooping up piles of play poop. Each obstacle has a certain point value based on difficulty. You choose which obstacles you and your dog want to complete – but choose wisely! You only have two minutes to rack up as many points as possible.

Do you go for the difficult obstacle worth a lot of points? Or do you complete a bunch of easier obstacles? It's the gambler's choice! As the Gambler says, "You've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em. Know when to walk away and know when to run ( with your tail between your legs!)

Ah yes, the sweet smell of puppy breath. But what happens when that sweet scent fades? If proper steps aren’t taken, you may very well end up with dastardly dog breath. And, not only can the smell become offensive, improper dental care can lead to gum disease and ultimately more serious health problems.

In case you didn’t know it, every year February is Pet Dental Health Month as a way to remind owners of the importance of proper dental care. Although we dogs rarely get cavities, we are prone to gum disease and excess tartar buildup on their teeth. Food particles and bacteria collect along our gum lines forming plaque. Routine home care can help remove this plaque.

As the Dog Scout Owner’s Motto states, “Our dogs’ lives are much shorter than our own, so let’s help them enjoy their time with us as much as we can.” Healthier teeth mean healthier dogs, so why not help prolong the lives of your canine companions by giving them proper dental care? My mom does.

Here are a few tips that I’ve picked up along the way to help curtail ghastly dog breath:

Enzymatic toothpaste (such as CET) – Mom loves the smell of my fresh mint-vanilla scented breath after brushing with it. Even if you aren’t a great brusher, toothpaste like CET contains an enzyme that inhibits the formation of calculus on your teeth. Never use human toothpaste. Other tasty flavors include liver, chicken, and beef. See your vet for a tube today!
Dental chews – While not as good as brushing, dental chews work by scraping the teeth clean during the chewing process, and also contain an enzyme that inhibits plaque.
Dental rinse – If you’re a belligerent bully and detest brushing and chewing, consider doggy dental rinse. Believe me, I know about bullies. I live with two – my brother, Roger, and sister, Thelma Lou. Again, never use human dental rinse.

Decisions. Decisions.

The goal of brushing is to brush the outside surface of teeth in area where teeth and gums meet. Training your dog to have his teeth brushed is no different than leash training. It takes time and patience. Most importantly make sure that each step is perceived as enjoyable and non-threatening by your pet, so don’t forget to load on the praise along the way. I just love hearing, “Good boy, Newman!”

Tips on the brushing process:

When introducing brushing, limit the session to no more than a few seconds, then discontinue the session. Start by rubbing your bare finger along the gums. Do this for a few seconds and build up to longer periods of time.
Add some dog enzymatic toothpaste to your fingertip and massage gums.
Apply some dog toothpaste to a pet toothbrush and brush outer surfaces of teeth and gums.

Don’t be a victim to stink breath. Have your owners take steps to prevent it.

GCh. stands for Grand Champion and completion of the title requires the following:

Twenty-five Grand Championship Points
Three majors won under three different AKC judges
At least one point won under a fourth AKC judge
Must have defeated at least one other AKC Champion of Record at three shows.

RN does not stand for registered nurse, but rather Rally Novice. The letters RN may be added after a dog's name when it has been certified by two different judges to have received qualifying score in Novice classes at three licensed or member rally trials.

Today was a good day! In addition to it being Martin Luther King Jr. Day, this morning for breakfast we polished off the last of the latest 30 lb. bag of Taste of the Wild which means the opening of a fresh bag and a pre-dinner crunchy scramble. Yee-ha! I knew that Dad would have something special planned for us on this historical day. He is so good at coordinating fun activities for us that I think his next job might be as an activities director at a nursing home -- except he's not looking for one!

While we are on the subject of nursing homes and in the spirit of MLK Day, Roger fulfilled an hour and half of community service yesterday by spreading cheer at a local nursing home.

I think it's great that MLK Day reminds people that community service is important, but community service is important every day of the year. Since day one, M&D have stressed the value of providing community service.

One of the activities was for kids to dress their humans up as snowman by wrapping them in toilet paper and adding snowman-like gear (gloves, hats, etc.), so Mom thought it would be fun to dress Thelma Lou up as a "snow-dog."

To the end of another doggone good year in the Knowlton household. Don't know how 2011 can be much better, but my resolution is to become the best Dog Scout that I can be. Our motto is "Let us learn new things so that we may become more helpful," so my New Year's resolution is to earn at least three merit badges in 2011. I currently have my sights set on the Community Service Badge, Clean Up America Badge, and the Backpacking Badge.

Roger's resolution is to not destroy a stuffed toy within five minutes of receiving it. I'm fairly certain that he doesn't plan to start abiding by that resolution until the clock strikes twelve since he gutted a new Dogzilla bone within minutes of getting it. Thankfully, Thelma Lou and I had about thirty minutes of prime tug-of-war with it before the little Frenchman stepped in and decided to kill it. Our house guest Lucy Lou, Thelma Lou's older sister, checked out of the Brushtown Area Resort and Spa earlier this evening. Pretty, pampered, and pleasantly plump. She will be missed, but we were all glad to see the wonderful reunion she had with her Mom. And so ends the "Twelve Days of Lucy."

While I just hung out around the house today with Dad, Roger, and our house guest Lucy, Thelma Lou and Mom decked the halls at Manor Care Health Services spreading Christmas cheer to many of the residents. Mom said that the smiles on the residents' faces were the best presents that we gave this year.

When not in the presence of her big brothers, Thelma Lou can be a big scaredy cat -- afraid of her own shadow. Mom was really surprised about how well she behaved in an environment surrounded by unfamiliar objects -- like wheel chairs, walkers, and large laundry bins. Last weekend Mom and I froze our butts off outside the local Walmart Super Center as Bell Ringers for the Salvation Army. Unfortunately for Mom, her big butt found its way back. Bad for her, "butt" good for me because it makes a wonderful pillow when I'm snuggled up to her in bed. She says she hates it, but I know differently.

All joking aside, we really had a wonderful time with our fellow Dog Scouts "ringing in" what will soon be a New Year and helping those less fortunate than we are. It's a crazy world when Mom debated whether or not it was politically correct to say, "Merry Christmas!" for fear it might offend someone.

As our astute Scout Leader Ms. Ann pointed out, Christmas is a federal holiday in the United States. Quite frankly, not many people cared what was coming out of our humans' mouths. They were much more impressed by Rowdy's bell-ringing and dollar-collecting abilities, as well as my tolerance of wearing a Santa hat.

Mom and I finished our Christmas cookie baking and bagging this past weekend by topping it off with a new Gingerbread muffin recipe! Daddy Dawg thinks that now Mom has finished baking cookies for all the dogs on the East Coast that maybe now she can bake some human cookies for him. While 1,662 homemade dog cookies seems like a lot from one dog's vantage point, it's really a drop in bucket when it comes combating the hunger in this world – whether K-9 or otherwise.

While I haven’t baked homemade K-9 cookies for awhile, I seem to have some free time on my paws since Mom had our calendars professionally printed this year. So I am pleased to tell you that we will be selling homemade K-9 Christmas Cookies this year. We baked our first batch of Gingerbread man shaped cheddar cheese cookies today, which had the house smelling delightful and even had M&D drooling. While not from Wisconsin, they are both cheese heads, so I guess I get it naturally. Swiss, Cheddar, Bleu. There isn't a cheese I've met that I don't love.

After checking out some of our favorite shopping spots and then comparison price shopping via Shopzilla, we ended up at Five Star Fido and purchased two new Chocolate Cuddle Soft Lounges to replace our dilapidated Fido Fleece beds. Don't worry. The bed is not made of chocolate. Mom knows that chocolate is not safe for dogs. Chocolate is the color of the beds -- at least for the time being -- until they become covered in drool and dog hair. Daddy Dawg is particularly happy about the removable, machine-washable cover which will make his weekly house cleaning chores much easier.

Persistence Pays Off — Big Dog Time

Howl-a-lejah! Mom's persistence in dressing us in stupid costumes finally pays off — Big Dog Time! Earlier last month, Aunt Cozy sent Mom a link to a Howl-o-ween photo contest being sponsored by BigDogs.com. After having witnessed one fifi dog after another winning contest time and time again, Mom had become jaded about entering us in such popularity contests.

But she figured, what the heck. Aunt Coe took the time to send the information which took less than two minutes to complete, so why not? After completing the entry process, Mom chalked it up to two minutes of her life that she'd never get back and forgot about it. That is until Monday night when her computer chimed, indicating that a new e-mail message had arrived. Expecting nothing but an e-bill, she was greatly surprised to find out that Roger and I were the Grand Prize winners of the Big Dog Howl-o-ween Photo Contest.

What does that mean? Rog and I have a check for $500 and an e-check for $500 to BigDogs.com coming our way. Dad said that the $500 will help offset this year's heating bills. Mom, on the other hand, has plans for a shopping spree. What a fitting birthday present for Roger who turns 4-years-old tomorrow. Happy Birthday, Little Man! We're all so very fortunate to have you in our lives.

While tomorrow is going to be "all about Rog", Saturday marks the one-year Animal-versary of Thelma Lou becoming my little baby Bully sister. Here's to celebrating two momentous occasions in one weekend. Let's get this party started.

K-9 Calendars Back By Popular Demand

Many of you have asked if there will be a 2011 calendar featuring Katandy's Triple Threat – Newman, Roger and Thelma Lou.

Of course! How can we stop a tradition that Beulah Ruth started?

Because of their overwhelming popularity, it has come to a point in time where I have decided to have the calendars professionally printed. Rest assured they will be of the same high quality that you have become accustomed to receiving. While there is something to be said about receiving a "homemade" calendar printed from my personal printer, the demand has reached a point where that process is no longer feasible.

The wall calendars will be printed on premium glossy 8.5x11 paper and saddle-stitched. Cost will be $15 per calendar ($17 if being shipped to you via USPS). Any proceeds made above cost will be donated to Dog Scouts of America.

If you would like to order a calendar(s), please let me know no later than November 22 in order to get them to you in plenty of time for Christmas. Please keep in mind that because Mom is having them printed professionally, we will not have the capability of last minute add-on orders. So, please make sure to order enough for friends and family. They make wonderful Christmas presents for dog lovers who have everything.

I am now a Dog Scout of Troop 161! Mom passed the responsible handler portion of the test on Saturday by completing the requisite "Smart End of the Leash" course. While normally I'm not one to toot my own horn, this is a huge accomplishment for Mom, my handler, and me. I now have the privilege of proudly wearing an official Dog Scout vest and scarf which Mom ordered today. Roger and Thelma are still Scouts-in-Training and are not yet entitled to that luxury. So, now the badge craze begins.

I've already started to work on the following badges:

PhoDOGraphy badge
Overnight Camping
Hiking

My first activity as a full-fledged Dog Scout is going to be bell-ringing for the Salvation Army. I am so excited it makes me want to go pee on a tree — only in my backyard, however, because elimination in an unseemly manner is forbidden by Dog Scouts.

After bell-ringing, I'm thinking of maybe taking my show on the road. A trip to national Dog Scout Camp in Michigan could very well be in my future. I just happen to have access to a very sweet RV owned by Grammy Lee and Uncle Mark.

I've taken the RV for a "virtual" test spin around the block already (while it was parked on risers), but that was before I earned my full Dog Scout title. I am sure that Uncle Mark will willingly hand over the keys for such an important educational trip where I will make him and Grammy Lee all the more proud!

Thelma Lou was not the only busy beaver this past weekend. Last Sunday, Roger logged in a few hours towards earning his Dog Scouts of America community service badge by selling Community Day Coupon Booklets at the Chambersburg area BonTon to help raise funds for Troop 161.

Thanks to everyone who has purchased a booklet from us. Don't forget to use them tomorrow, November 13! Undoubtedly, the funds raised by Dog Scout Troop 161 will be put to good use -- like our recent donation of pet oxygen masks to local area fire departments.

In the aftermath of Boxer Fun Day, one might think that the activities of Katandy's Triple Threat have died down, however, the opposite is true. Yesterday, Thelma Lou made her debut as Buckley the Beaver at Children's Banking Day held at the Newville area branch ACNB Bank promoting the importance of saving money.

As an older, wiser brother, I'm not sure if I should intervene or not. I've been told that Thelma Lou's popularity last Saturday at Children's Banking Day has gone to her big Bully head and she's thinking that she can overthrow the official Big Spring Bulldog mascot who was also participating in Children's Banking Day.

We suffered a terrible defeat in last week's election. Just maybe we can vote in some-dog worthy of fulfilling a position for which she is clearly qualified. May the best dog win!

So as not to freak out my friends and family while we were vacationing in the OBX, I waited to make this post until after our safe return.

"Shark attacks are a fairly rare occurrence. Sharks generally don't enjoy eating people, much preferring fattier nautical fare like delicious blubbery seals. Most attacks are a case of mistaken identity, occurring in low visibility situations where a shark is more likely to mistake a flailing human for a tasty sea lion. As a matter of fact within the past two months, I have spotted two -- one off the coast of Corolla, NC and the other on a sandy beach on Tybee Island, GA. Don't you just love doctors' offices. You make an appointment, but for what? To sit in the waiting room for dog only knows how long before they take you back to the exam room for yet more waiting. Take for instance my friend Canyon, who took her three toddlers in for their first wellness check today only to have them fall asleep in the waiting room.

We returned safely from the Outer Barks yesterday. While leaving is always sad, we all have to come back to reality sooner or later. Somebody's gotta make the donuts (that would be Mom!). A great time was had by all. As we bid a fond farewell to the friends we met the first week here in Corolla, we welcomed a new group of friends including our cousins, Cooter and Hannah. Since they were chased out of town by Hurricane Earl a week earlier, we decided that it was only fair to put them up for a night in our beach chalet. They managed to survive "sleeping" in one of the empty queen size beds. Although both Uncle RB and Aunt Nancy looked dog-tired when they hit the hay, the squeaking that was emanating from their bedroom leads me to believe otherwise.

One might ask how it's possible to feel crabby at the beach? I think that the following film footage, originally shot May 31, 2009 on the sunny beaches of Corolla, NC explains it all. Having been born in Maryland, I don't know whether it's because Roger was a former resident of Maryland and exposed to crabbin' at an early age or whether he's just a natural born killer, but Roger is by far the best crabber on the beach.

FYI — No crabs or Frenchies were injured in the taping of this clip.

As a matter of fact, he was so obsessed with chasing crabs that he wouldn't pay any attention to Ms. Collette, thus knocking him down a peg on her ladder of favorite canines and moving Thelma Lou up a notch to numero uno.

As I mentioned before, we have met some really nice people during our travels to the Outer Barks - even without Roger wearing his Chick Magnet t-shirt he naturally draws the attention. Personally, I think that somehow those bat ears of his are synced up with the parabolic dish that Dad sinks in the sand everyday which creates the draw. Don't know for sure. Just a theory, but it does seem a little paranormal.

They even so graciously offered to puppy sit us to give M&D a romantic night out in the OBX, but Mom knows how fussy Roger can be about eating his vegetables for dinner and did not think it fair to subject them to one of his temper tantrums.

Even though the vacation got off to a "ruff" start with Hurricane Earl chasing vacationers out the day before our arrival, we've met a lot of really nice people and are having an awesome time.

As a Dog Scout, this doesn't sit well with me. However, it does present me with the opportunity to work on my Clean Up America II Dog Scout (DSA) badge. So far, I've collected and documented three stray piles left by irresponsible owners. I always carry at least two bags on my canine -- one for my droppings, and one to offer to someone who looks like they aren't going to clean up their friend.

Last weekend when she was with her girlfriends at the mall, she bought a skin tight baby doll t-shirt and a denim mini skirt that she thinks she's going to wear on the first day of school. Well, Dad has news for her. He says she's not leaving the house in it because it shows off entirely too much fur. In an effort to extinguish the heated argument between M&D on the subject, I offered to conduct a poll of my fans to settle the issue.

Even if we had planned a midnight get-a-way, it would have probably backfired since Auntie Beth came out at 3 a.m. asking if we wanted to abandon our perfectly anchored Coleman tent to sleep in her camper because a severe storm was stirring. While it was very thoughtful of Aunt Beth to be concerned with our safety, I think she was really testing my emotional strength -- knowing that I would not be able to keep my paws off Peanut under cover of darkness in the camper.

Needless to say, Mom and I weathered the storm just perfectly in our tent. Unscathed, we bid a fond farewell to Centre Hall Grange Fairground on Saturday afternoon.

While out for our morning constitutional, Mom managed to catch a "dear" friend on film. While not the best example of her photography skills, the color of the doe's coat reminded Mom so much of Beulah Ruth that she wanted me to share these photos.

I decided to take my morning dump on the south forty acres and was not within viewing range. Thelma saw it, but she's such a good girl that she sat by Mom's side like she always does. Roger was buried in about two feet of brush − dicking around as usual − and couldn't see the lovely creature 15 feet in front of him.

For some dogs Fourth of July fireworks are a major source of anxiety and fear. To help keep your furry, four-legged friends safe, I've put together a list of tips that I picked up from various sources along the way.

Do not take your pet to fireworks displays.
Do not leave your pet in the car. With only hot air to breathe inside a car, your pet can suffer serious health effects—even death—in a few short minutes. Partially opened windows do not provide sufficient air.
Keep your pets indoors at home in a sheltered, quiet area. Some animals can become destructive when frightened, so be sure that you've removed any items that your pet could destroy or that would be harmful to your pet if chewed. Leave a television or radio playing at normal volume to keep him company.
If you know that your pet is seriously distressed by loud noises like thunder, consult with your veterinarian before July 4th for ways to help alleviate the fear and anxiety he or she will experience during fireworks displays.
Never leave pets outside unattended, even in a fenced yard or on a tether. In their fear, pets who normally wouldn't leave the yard may escape and become lost, or become entangled in their chain, risking injury or death.
Make sure your pets are wearing identification tags so that if they do become lost, they can be returned promptly. Animals found running at-large should be taken to the local animal shelter, where they will have the best chance of being reunited with their owners.

Well Mom and I recently went on our overnight camping trip with our Dog Scout Troop. I am happy to report that I passed the test for my badge with flying colors. In order to earn the badge, I had to remain under control while Mom pitched our tent, helped build the fire, and engaged in other activities for which I was not needed (like drinking wine!). I also was responsible for carrying the following twelve items in my own backpack:

Bowl
Water
Extra Collar
Extra Leash
Three Cleanup Bags (at least)
Flashlight
First-Aid Kit
Matches
Identification (for my human handler)
Compass
Knife
Signaling Device (whistle or mirror)

Mom was required to understand the principal of outdoorsmanship, leaving nothing behind by footprints and taking nothing but photographs of the wonderful flora and fauna of the forest. She also had to demonstrate how to start a fire with one match, knowing the differences between tinder, kindling, and fuel and where to find these items.

Another requirement for me to earn the badge was that Mom had to demonstrate cooking over a fire. The Troop chose pancakes as the meal to prepare. Freshly picked wild huckleberries provided a pleasant surprise to the otherwise so-so flap jacks.

Speaking of pancakes, my little sister does an incredible imitation of a pancake. In case you aren't familiar with the term, it means to spread oneself out on a flat surface (often times a bed or couch) doing absolutely nothing. I believe the pancake is a distant relative to the couch potato.

A properly socialized canine is well adjusted and makes a good companion. An unsocialized canine is untrustworthy and is frequently unpleasant to be around. We all know the ones − whether they are the yappers, who bark at their shadows, or the snappers, who bite out of fear.

Since we live so close to Pine Grove Furnace State Park, we thought that last weekend was the perfect time to work on Thelma's socialization skills by exposing her to all things summer. Besides me, the list of "new" things that Thelma Lou was exposed to included: a few other friendly dogs, beach goers all shapes and sizes (many of whom were rotund), wading in the water, and the Coleman K-9 instant shade tent that very easily converts into a timeout pad which Roger learned after disobeying Daddy Dawg's orders to "leave it."

Well, we're on Day 11 of the Twelve Days of Destitution here in the Knowlton household. My little beach bum brother returned home safely last Saturday via the local Brushtown Area Transit System (BATS) − aka Uncle Mike and Aunt Sherry's Lexus.

We are all anxiously awaiting Daddy Dawg's return tomorrow. As indicated in my prior post, Mom blew her $12 food allowance on us in under 8 hours of Dad's departure, so she raided our piggy bank for change and has been eating Ramen noodles ever since. At 28 cents per cup at Wal-mart, she was able to purchase 42 cups of various flavors − having one for lunch and two for dinner each day. That left 6 cups with which to play "Bowling for Noodles," a fun new game that we created using our new chicken-shaped Nylabone to knock over the most cups.

Kids on the bus have started calling us the Ramen Noodle Gang. Rog and I think it's cool to be referred to as a gang even though we'd rather be called Katandy's Triple Threat. Quite frankly, the insults don't bother us, but Thelma Lou is a little embarrassed. She may be all bully on the outside, but she's all girl on the inside. One of the most important lessons that Dad has taught us is how sensitive girls can be − especially during certain times of the month.

Other than the fact that Cooper's a Blackhawks fan, I have nothing against him. After all, we're both Democrats. Living in the predominantly Republican county of Cumberland, Cooper and I realize we have to stick together.
