Mardi Growl

Seeing how eating is one of Thelma Lou's all time favorite activities, Fat Tuesday rates high on her scale of holidays to celebrate. It's time to Mardi Growl! Let the calorie consumption begin!

Spring Training

So with the mild weather this past weekend, Roger and I decided to get a jump on our spring training to start gearing up for this year's Hike-a-Thon to raise money for Dog Scouts of America. Last year we raised $450 and came in fourth place nationally in our fundraising efforts. We hope to top that number this year with help from Pappy John and his four-legged friend Jasper. They were the real catalyst in getting our butts out to walk. Pappy just finished his first full round of radiation and chemotherapy, so Jasper thought that taking him for a walk at South Middleton Park would be a great way to celebrate.

In addition to logging 3-miles under our collars, Roger also collected 3 stray piles of the required 50 piles of poo towards his Clean Up America Dog Scout Badge. Rather than use up all our Bags on Board during this walk, next trip we'll be taking a poop scooper because it's obvious that many dogs walk their irresponsible owners along the pedestrian path of this lovely park laid out by Boy Scouts. What a shame!

Clean Up America Badge

It's a good thing that we didn't witness any of these inconsiderate folks in action or else Mom would have walked up to them and asked them if they needed a bag to cleanup after their four-legged friend. Believe me, Mom is not afraid to get on her soap box and lecture irresponsible pet owners, who make it "ruff" for those of us who do care about the environment and cleaning up.

As a matter of fact, she did very politely explain to an owner of a 4-year-old boxer the benefits of spaying and neutering. I fear that if we run into too many more unaltered dogs at the park, Mom is going to have the phrase "Don't litter. Spay and neuter your pets!" embroidered on to my Dog Scout uniform.

Another reason to make sure that I am in tip-top shape is because I am tentatively on the schedule to lead several 3-mile hikes at Troop 161's Blue Ridge Mini Camp which will be held in Swanton, Maryland in August. For more information about camp, please check out our Troop's Blue Ridge Dog Scout Mini Camp blog.

America's Dog Show

While my time in the show ring was short-lived, I can't help but provide you with these highlights of the Boxer Best of Breed judging at Westminster.

Since I didn't have any relatives in the ring — at least none that I know of, we had to root for Scarlett (GCh. Winfall Brookwood Styled Dream), who I've had the pleasure of meeting at last year's National American Boxer Club. Yes, it is true. My heart pined away for her as I stood peering out the window of our hotel room at her during her morning run sporting her red booties and all.

For those of you who don't follow the Boxer World, Scarlett is the #1 Boxer, #1 Working Dog, and #3 Dog Among All Breeds. As predicted, Scarlett took Best of Breed at the National ABC show last year in Kentucky, but my cousin GCh. Katandy's Fast Forward "Frankie" took Best Opposite Sex — making him Top Dog.

Daddy Dawg Rocks

I will have to tell this story since Mom doesn't believe in posting on Facebook what a good life, we have at the Knowlton Household. Quite frankly, I cannot imagine a better one.

Anyway, Mom traveled to State College recently to interview some students at Penn State Law's University Park campus and had a productive day — learning details about the great students we have.

After coming home, getting in her jammies, she realized that she mistakenly brought home the key to the fleet car which she used in her travels. Panicked and hoping beyond all belief that the car was not reserved for the next day, she called the Law School's Director of Business Services, who informed her that the fleet car was scheduled for 7 o'clock the next morning. RATS!

Being a crazy dog mom that she is, I might also mention that she was extremely excited about the arrival of our new soft-sided crates by Premier that she purchased at Overstock.com for $75 a piece. What a steal! I was darn near as excited as she was, since I can actually fit in this one as opposed to the one she "picked up" from the trash at last year's ABC National Show in Kentucky and fixed.

For the love of Dog, please someone get me out of this box

As illustrated below, I can still stick my head out of the top of the convertible when it's open, but notice all the extra leg room. Heck, I can have a party in my new crib. And, as a bonus it comes with a cushioned mat, which I have been known to destroy so we'll see how long that lasts.

Size does matter. Check out the size of this crib!

My bully siblings can't stand the excitement of our new crates

Back to my story ... Not planning to be at work the following morning at the butt crack of dawn, Mom decided that she needed to return the key to the Law School that night. At that point, Dad, Thelma Lou, Roger and I had just arrived home from delivering Meals on Wheels, but Dad insisted on driving the key back into the Law School so that Mom wouldn't have to get back in the car after having spent four hours on the road traveling.

Hats off to our Daddy Dawg. Seriously, he is the best Daddy Dawg in the world. This is after he arose at 5:30 in the morning and drove Pappy John to his radiation treatment in Hershey, then made and delivered Meals on Wheels.

My Grammy Lee has offered to place him with several homes if we ever get sick of him. Fat chance!!! Did I mention he cooks, cleans, and takes us for daily rides???

So, if you hear about any "Daddy Dawg of the Year Award" competitions out there, please let me know, because he certainly deserves a nomination.

We love you Daddy Dawg!!!

News Flash: Newman is still alive

News Flash: Newman Knowlton is still alive even though he hasn't blogged in over a month!!!

I know that everyone gets "wrapped" up in the hustle and bustle of the holidays, but I thought that I would get a break from the rat race during January. Unfortunately, M&D are as busy as ever and that prevents me from blogging because I absolutely refuse to publish a post without at least one of my editors proofing. For Dog's sake, I do have a reputation to uphold.

I am happy to report that our fundraising effort to raise money for the American Cancer Society and the Morris Animal Canine Cancer Campaign by selling calendars was a smashing success!!! Just tonight Mom wrote out checks to both charities for $250. Thank you all for your support!

This year's campaign was especially heartfelt because, unfortunately, cancer has been a big part of our lives. In September, my Pappy John was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. I am very happy say that he looked the beast in the eye, vowed to beat it and said, "Bring it on!" Actually, he didn't say that, but he is attacking it with that attitude which has served him well.

Is this my Pappy John with a fencing mask on while undergoing radiation?

In October, Mom lost a treasured co-worker from Penn State Law from a courageous battle with esophageal cancer. In December, I lost my Great Aunt Mary Kennedy to bone cancer. I could go on listing people we lost or have been afflicted with cancer, but that's a bummer.

Ally practicing this past summer for "Cartwheels for Cancer"

My two-legged cousin and aspiring young gymnast, Ally Richwine, who is cute as a bug in a rug, recently joined me in the War Against Cancer in the hopes that we will find a cure. She just recently participated in "Cartwheels for Cancer" and completed 287 cartwheels in 10 minutes and raised nearly $150. Certainly nothing to snub your nose at. Being a snub-nosed beast, I would know.

Although slightly disappointed — and very light headed — that she didn't reach the 300 mark, she certainly has nothing to be ashamed of. Don't worry kiddo, next year you'll reach your goal. I'm very proud that you have chosen to follow in my paw-steps raising funds for important charities. You rock!

Thank you to all my supporters in our joint campaign against cancer — for both two-legged and four-legged friends.

P.S. Women — Don't forget to "Feel Your Boobies!" I know Dad loves to feel Mom's. BOL!

Katandy's Triple Threat 2012 Calendar

In case you can't wait for your 2012 Calendar to arrive, here's a preview. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society and the Morris Animal Foundation Canine Cancer Campaign. Let's help find a cure for this horrible disease that affects so many people and animals in our lives.

Thank you to all who have ordered calendars to support our cause. Limited quantities are still available. If interested, email me at newmanontheblock@gmail.com.

Wishing you a healthy and happy holiday!
